points that certain stakeholders are looking to address.
For example, whether one's a product manager, tech guy,
in sales and marketing, or doing logistics, there's an area on
the site that's designed for those needs. "Part of what we
do is try to understand the day-to-day challenges and how
we can provide support to overcome those with everything
from our products to our services," Palma said. "For each
segment, we show customers what we can do and obviously
have information about our product lines and information
about our innovative grease technologies and what industries
the products are used in."
Lon Fanning, director, R&D, technical support, metalworking for DuBois Chemicals, said he likes the ILMA website itself
because it has so much information for members, and his own
website tries to mimic the important features so customers
can be informed about its products and services.
The DuBois website includes case studies, white pages and
links to the latest news and events surrounding the company
and the industry. "We understand the importance of having
a site on which customers can find what they want and
need," Fanning said. "If you're a company in this industry
without a strong website in today's tech-savvy culture, you're
going to be left behind."
MAKING IMPROVEMENTS
While there's no set timeline for a website redesign, if a
website runs on software that is no longer supported, doesn't
run on a modern operating system or looks outdated, it may
be time to consider serious improvements.
Ultimately, if your website no longer serves your customers or users without problems, it is time for an upgrade. This
is especially true if your site can't be read on a mobile device.
When O'Donnell was gearing up for Datacor's redesign of
its website, one of the most important things she considered
was user experience, or UX. "Your No. 1 goal should be
to make your website easy to use," she said. "That means
starting with a responsive design, as the number of mobile
users outnumbers desktop. If your website is not built to be
viewed on a mobile device, you're in trouble."
She also included intuitive navigation on the site, making
the crucial elements of the website easy to find, such as
