LETTER FROM THE CEO
Lessons From 2020
I
felt more joy than usual on New Year's Eve watching the virtual ball drop in Times Square. This time
last year, no one knew what " social distancing " meant, and face masks were reserved for Halloween.
Just a few weeks after we rang in 2020, everything changed.
In 2020, we learned some new ways to communicate that will be with us for a while. Thank you for
your participation in our virtual Town Halls, #LubeTrends and first (and hopefully last) virtual Annual
Meeting. In addition to the #LubeTrends periodic Town Halls, watch for the new #LubeTrends podcast
debuting in a few weeks.
As we plan for all of these new initiatives, it strikes me that there were a few good, positive developments that emerged from this awful time. The other day, I found some notes I jotted down during the
Union of the European Lubricants Industry's virtual meeting, and I couldn't help but notice that the
participants in the UEIL session also identified some of the good things that we all experienced:

New Date!

* Efficiency. We can actually get work done without
stepping on an airplane. We can do business, have meetings and make new connections without leaving our
homes. And we can learn! Some companies have taken
advantage of having employees tethered to computers by
offering them training and development programs that
they never had time for in the past.
* Proficiency with technology. This is the year we were
all forced to explore new technology, including Zoom,
Microsoft Teams, Skype, etc. We learned new apps and
how to get what we need (toilet paper, personal protective
equipment, a nice restaurant dinner) without leaving our
homes. Who knew?
* More balance in our lives. We all had a lot of family
time, and the pace of life slowed down a bit. Though
there were a few disruptions, we mostly got through it
with a little help from our families and friends.
Hopefully, with a vaccine becoming available over the
next few months, we will transition to the " new normal, "
with life opening up again, offering opportunities to reconnect with friends, business acquaintances and distant family
members but with more emphasis on hygiene and safety. To
ensure that members will be able to meet up again, ILMA
moved its spring meeting dates from April to June 23-25.

together at ILMA Engage at the Park Hyatt Aviara in
Carlsbad, California.
