However, QR codes do have
drawbacks. Musiol said there have
been studies in China where only 10%
of the customers used the QR link to
the website due to missing technical
capabilities, such as not having a smartphone, or because of data protection
concerns. There have also been times
when QR codes lead customers to fake
websites to verify the fake packaging to
spread computer viruses, he said.
One of the biggest challenges is
that some counterfeiters simply reuse
authentic packaging. " If they reuse
oil packaging, even if you authenticate it, it looks correct. That is why it
is also important to look at the cap, "

to look like the larger brand name
and are purchased by mistake. " The

they can hardly be legally approached,

Covert AntiCounterfeiting Solutions
Overt solutions help customers identify counterfeits, but the characteristics
need to be communicated. " As soon as

specifically targeted by the counterfeiters, " Musiol said.
Some companies are using covert
solutions. AlpVision's tools can authenticate products through cryptoglyph
technology, in which a smartphone can
scan a label or packaging. There are
thousands of small holes - smaller
than a hair - and in the varnish layer,
they are printed all over the packaging
or label. " They are all over, and the
way the varnish is laid out over the
label creates a pattern the technology
reads, " Jordan said, adding that no
special ink or varnish is required, and
the printing process remains the same.
AlpVision has 50 printers all over
the world in the lubricants industry.
It has 80 patents, and its technologies
have never been counterfeited.
AlpVision's covert fingerprint solution tracks and authenticates products
using intrinsic microscopic surface
irregularities found on a bottle or cap.
" Two caps that come from the same
mold have the same microstructure.
