Even before the pandemic, twinaisles were in oversupply relative to
demand. Airlines were shifting away
from them and toward single-aisles,
even for international routes, for economy of operations and flexibility.
" From a lubricants standpoint,
that's just as well, because single-aisles
tend to get turned around a lot more, "
Aboulafia added.
An apparent recovery of business
aircraft production offers little
comfort. " It's an order of magnitude
different from commercial jetliner
utilization, " said Aboulafia. " You use
a business jet on average 500 hours a
year. A commercial jet flies thousands
and thousands of hours. "
Lubricants got swept into what
Aboulafia calls an " aftermarket
catastrophe. " The phenomenon known
as " destocking " prompted airlines to
halt orders of new supplies while they
scrounged warehouses for the minimal
supplies needed during the crisis.
" We just got out of a year where we
were two-thirds down, with aftermarket closely in line with that, " said
Aboulafia. " You don't order lubricants
because you've got the stuff stored
around, ready for a much bigger fleet.
You just use what you've got. From
a provisioning standpoint, that's a
catastrophe. "
However, financial analysts see
growing demand for air travel and
commercial aviation, providing a
boon to airline lubricants. In addition, demand for biodegradable and
nonhazardous products will rise in
response to manufacturers demanding
climate-friendly options. In fact,
according to researchandmarkets.com,
the total global aviation lubricants
market is expected to grow from $2
billion in 2020 to $2.9 billion by
2025, a compound annual growth rate
of 7.2%, with commercial aviation
leading the way.
Resilience
When circumstances are dire, " the only
good news is that everything else is
kind of good news, " noted Aboulafia.
The military segment of aerospace is
steady. Airline factories remain open.
Cargo aviation never dipped as steeply
as passenger aviation, and recovery
is looking well. The federal Paycheck
Protection Program (PPP) allowed
