The data empowers oil marketers to analyze regions and
target production, shipment and marketing toward the
products best suited to serve the vehicles populating that
country. " It's beneficial when companies want to go to a new
country or a new region and want to know what product to
take, or when retailers are asking what products they should
have in stock, " said Oosting.
It's a function of using data to elevate the question from
" What oil? " to " What next? " noted Aquitania. " How will
this data take my business to the next level? "
For the lubricant manufacturers supplying those oil
brands, that level of data specificity advises answers to the
same questions. " If they know exactly the product their
customers need and the volume they need, they can produce
that package for the industry, " said Oosting.
Data analysis can also give lubricants manufacturers
predictive powers by revealing market trends. Even shipping
decisions can be informed, and costs lowered, by helping
calculate quantities needed down to the kilo.
And even though electric vehicle (EV) uptake remains a
tiny sliver of overall purchases, such data can reveal pockets
of adoption - regions where EVs are becoming popular -
that can guide strategic planning.
" A lot of decisions are still made in the industry based on
estimations and even emotions, " said Oosting. " They do a lot
of research, but the last part they're missing is bringing the
pieces together and having the real insights, the real figures. "
A DECISION TREE
Deciding how and where to incorporate AI begins with
understanding its distinct types, said Glenn P. Williams,
lecturer in advanced manufacturing, augmented reality and
robotics at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology
in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania:
* " Thinking " intelligence assesses situations and makes
decisions, growing smarter with each application.
* " Dependent " intelligence is narrower in scope, needing
specific inputs before delivering a result, such as accelerating
or slowing down manufacturing as conditions warrant.
Manufacturers know their systems and can leverage their
knowledge to maximize processes through the use of AI.
Start by choosing the areas where solutions are needed -
" better forecasting, better control, better information, faster
warning systems on flows or temperatures, whatever it's
supposed to do, " said Williams.
But it's important to remember that AI won't bring organization
to a process that's disorganized. First, that process
