NOTES FROM MSCI

on downstream domestic markets, manufacturers and steel
producers. Simply increasing the price of imported steel will
inevitably increase the input costs of U.S. manufactured steel
products, potentially making important segments of the U.S.
manufacturing base less competitive in the global economy.
MSCI is unique in that we advocate for both a healthy domestic
source of supply and a pro-manufacturing environment.
Policies that help us compete and foster success - without
driving manufacturers off-shore - are imperative. We will again
testify before the USTR in September on behalf of aluminum.
The second lesson is that, like ILMA, we've also learned the
power of the collective voice. MSCI gains influence and
traction with decision-makers in Washington by partnering
with other organizations through coalitions. When trade
associations band together to present a common, unified
message to lawmakers and regulators, we have a better chance

at making a strong impression and affecting change. Each
organization matters, but together our voice is even more
compelling. The same is true for individual voters - every vote
counts. As an association, it's vital to educate members and
their employees about the critical issues affecting our jobs and
industry. To accomplish that, MSCI has developed a "Get Out
the Vote" campaign and resources, encouraging members to
hold voter registration drives. As an industry, we can make our
voice heard through our votes.
In addition to trade, MSCI is engaged in a number of other
issues. Our issues agenda includes the following positions on
issues critical to metals:
Energy, environment and transportation: Lower, more stable
energy prices will make U.S. manufacturers more competitive
with their foreign counterparts.
Ensuring a stable workforce: A skilled workforce is
fundamental to a prosperous North American metals industry,
yet we face serious education and training challenges that
threaten our productivity and competitiveness.

Health care: Washington must preserve what works in our
health care system while reforming what does not.
Regulatory reform: Regulations are necessary to ensure
consumer and worker well-being, but overregulation imposes
significant costs on Americans without improving their daily
lives or enhancing their safety or prosperity.
Taxes and fiscal responsibility: Leaders in Washington must
reduce the overall tax and compliance burden and establish a
simpler, flatter and fairer system that will encourage investment
and innovation.
Our complete issues platform, along with opportunities to
become more involved, can be found on our new advocacy
website, MSCI.org/MetalMatters. Join us - and be sure to
exercise your right to vote in November!
