in energy use and revitalizing the role of tribology research
in the 21st century. Moreover, the great advances in methods
such as atomically resolved simulations, in-situ tribology testing
across length scales, and novel lubricant base stocks and
additives create opportunities for revolutionary new ideas that
were impossible to explore in the past. At ARPA-E, the Tribology
Opportunities Study would like to challenge the Independent
Lubricant Manufacturers Association, its members and
constituents to provide suggestions and specific ideas to save
massive amounts of energy and have a tangible and measurable
impact on CO2 emission, climate change and energy efficiency.
Emphasis should be on redefining the role of tribology in
a more modern context, with a focus toward high-impact
transformative, non-incremental approaches, but with end-use
implementation considered.
Does your research and development have a focus on the
reduction of energy use? Do you see the potential to reduce
annual energy consumption by a quad through tribological
improvements? Can you recommend innovative and cuttingedge research projects or technologies that would achieve this?
If so, ARPA-E wants to know and speak with you.
The anticipated outcome of this investigation is to highlight
promising areas of tribology research that could potentially
be funded by ARPA-E to reduce energy consumption in the
United States. ARPA-E's mission is to support high-potential,
high-impact transformative energy technologies that are too
early for private-sector investment. ARPA-E focuses on projects
that have the potential to radically improve America's economic
security, national security and environmental well-being with
funding, technical assistance and market-readiness.

and address the challenge of energy efficiency.
