SYNTHETICS MARKET EXPECTED TO GROW THROUGH 2020
Technical requirements and consumer awareness will drive the growth of synthetic
lubricants and functional fluids, according to a new study by Reportlinker. Regulatory requirements such as corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) and EPA
emission standards are driving more investment into research and development for
synthetics. Expect to see more interest worldwide in low-viscosity fluids, Group
III base oils and nontoxic coolants using propylene glycols.
SHELL MARINE IS USING BIG DATA TO ENHANCE CUSTOMER
RELATIONSHIPS AND INCREASE SALES
Shell Marine announced a new sales model this spring that improves the customer
relationship. "We are helping our customers to reduce their operational costs by
monitoring lubricant consumption and providing advice about future volume liftings and ports," Jan Toschka, Shell Marine executive director, said via the company website. Shell Marine will also be offering customers new payment solutions to
help ship owners better manage working capital and budgeting. Two possibilities
are "flexi-pay" and "pay as you consume" programs.
SCIENTISTS AT CARNEGIE DEVELOP ULTRASTRONG, LIGHTWEIGHT
ELASTIC CARBON
For those in the market for a new lightweight material who have the budget to
afford it, a team including scientists at Carnegie might have just the thing. It is
a form of ultra-strong, lightweight carbon that is elastic and electrically conductive. According to a news release, "the newly created carbon is comprised of both
graphite-like and diamond-like bonding motifs, which gives rise to the unique
combination of properties." Zhisheng Zhao, a former Carnegie Fellow who is now
a Yanshan University professor, said. More specifically, it gives rise to materials
such as opaque graphite, which is used for industrial lubricant. Read the team's

CATERPILLAR REVISES MACHINE FLUIDS RECOMMENDATIONS BULLETIN
Caterpillar has revised its Machine Fluids Recommendations Bulletin, covering
the company's most current recommendations and specifications for lubricants,
fuels and cooling system fluids. One big change to note: Caterpillar says the new
API FA-4 Heavy Duty Engine Oil is not allowed in Cat engines. The bulletin
includes tables showing specific lubricant recommendations and viscosities for
various ambient temperatures for all compartments of all Caterpillar equipment.
Should Caterpillar-branded lubricants not be available, commercially available lubricants such as engine oils meeting API CK-4 and Caterpillar's Engine Crankcase
Fluid (ECF) specifications are allowed.
