API Lubricants Group Meeting with
Automakers on Supplement to GF-5

he American Petroleum Institute (API) Lubricants
Group is meeting with U.S. and Japanese automakers to discuss their request that API develop a
supplement to the existing International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee's (ILSAC) GF-5 specification to
include low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) protection.

Ten U.S. and Japanese automakers have requested that a
new supplement be created to prevent further occurrences of
oil-derived LSPI. The supplement is also expected to protect
numerous turbocharged direct-injection engine-powered
vehicles on the road today that might be affected by LSPI.
The automakers submitting the request are Ford, Fiat
Chrysler, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi,
Mazda, Daihatsu, Subaru and Suzuki.
API's Lubricants Group collaborates on a regular basis
with engine manufacturers to ensure that API engine oil
specifications provide the performance desired by automakers and diesel engine manufacturers. API is a leading
developer of globally recognized engine oil standards that
protect new and current engine technologies.
The automakers presented their request to the group at a
meeting at API in August to begin the process for evaluation
and approval. The manufacturers' request stipulates that the

supplement include all of the performance requirements
now in ILSAC GF-5, plus the Ford Low Speed Pre-ignition
Engine test with a maximum average number of events
of five, and include SAE 0W-16 oils. The API Lubricants
Group is now determining whether licensing of this supplemental designation can be completed by the automakers'
requested first licensing date of Jan. 1, 2018. The last API
supplement, CI-4 PLUS, took one year to implement following established API procedures.
The ILSAC GF-5 specification is the engine oil performance standard recommended by many U.S., Japanese and
Korean automakers. It is also the standard by which API
licenses engine oils to display the globally recognized API
certification mark starburst.
