IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
"My mom's name, Kook-Wha, actually means Chrysanthemum -
like the flower. That is how she came up with the name for
Chrysan Industries. If you look at our logo, in fact, you'll see it's
actually a chrysanthemum inside a cyclohexane ring."
ON THE FAMILY BUSINESS
WHOM DO YOU ADMIRE MOST IN THE WORLD?
"I would say I admire my mom most in the world. She is an
ambitious woman who was not afraid to break all the barriers.
She was the first Korean woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemical
engineering, and she started her own business in 1977. Also, at
the time she did it, she was the second oldest person to climb
Mount Kilimanjaro. I don't remember exactly how old she was,
but I want to say she did that in her mid-70s. The reporters were
actually making bets to see whether or not she would make it."
"I started driving a Hi-Lo (forklift) when I was 10 years old and
worked almost every weekend and summer at Chrysan. My
dad taught me how to cut and thread pipe and blend metalworking fluids.
"What I wanted to do eventually was start a biotech company. I didn't always plan on going back to work at Chrysan. I
had a conversation with one of my professors at the time. He
asked me what I wanted to do, and we got to talking about
the family business and I said, 'Oh, I don't want to work there.
That's all I ever did growing up, and it took away from everything else I wanted to do.' My professor then said, 'Really?
Gosh, what an opportunity that is. Don't rule that out. Give
it a chance.' Well, frankly, I really never thought of it that way
before, and he sort of talked me into it."
ON HIS KIDS JOINING THE FAMILY BUSINESS
"It's kind of early, but they have worked at Chrysan on the
packaging line, which was interesting. You know, there's two
things that would have to happen for them to come back [to
work] here: They would have to No. 1, be interested and be
passionate about [the industry], and No. 2, they would have
to earn it. I encourage them to get some work experience
outside the company, and I would like for them to travel both
here in the U.S. and internationally as well."
ON TRAVEL
"My favorite place I've been to was on a trip with my family
where we went backpacking in Yosemite. The backpacks
weighed 40 or 50 pounds. We cooked our own food; we slept
in tents; we dug holes in the ground to go to the bathroom. It
was a really cool trip."
