produce its Biosynthetic Base Oil and says the oil is compatible with other lubricant base oils and additives, serving as a
drop-in for most existing formulations. The company claims
Biosynthetic Oil has a viscosity index of 164, an oxidative
stability of 1,534 and a lower evaporation rate with improved
lubricity, increasing fuel economy by 3 percent. The company plans to build a $150 million plant in the U.S. along the
Gulf Coast of Texas.
The price of palm oil has fallen to almost half of its peak
price, reached in 2011. With new processing technology and
improved performance, it is becoming an attractive alternative
raw material for base oils.
Although most vegetable oils require costly processing
to meet industry performance standards, new products such
as modified vegetable oils, including estolide fluids, can be
priced higher than conventional hydrocarbon Group I, II
and III base oils, but lower than premium synthetic hydrocarbons and esters, according to Dr. Ray Bergstra, owner
of MTN Consulting Associates, a science and technologyfocused consultancy in Canada.
In addition, with new technologies enhancing biolubricant performance, more applications will be developed
for the global market. Already, lubricant giant Castrol
entered the market this year with its first plant-based Edge
Bio-Synthetic motor oil. The product claims to be "indistinguishable in terms of performance from other BP and
Castrol products" and exceeds fuel economy performance
criteria set by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and
the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval
Committee (ILSAC GF-5).
For the moment, "Biolubricant usage is very low and
concentrated in few European countries and the U.S. The
biggest challenge for improving the situation is reducing
production costs and making their prices more attractive,"
said José André Cavalcanti da Silva, a researcher at Petrobras, an energy company in Brazil.
In Asia, where environmental policies and regulations are
lacking, attractive performance offerings such as improvements in energy and fuel cost savings might become the main
driver for growth. The global biolubricant market exceeded
$2 billion in 2015 and is expected to almost double to 1,115
kilotons by 2024, growing at a compounded annual rate of
6.9 percent from 2016 to 2024, according to Grand View
Research, a global consultancy based in San Francisco.
