with heart disease have a higher percentage of lost workdays
related to injuries than those without heart disease. The
researchers also found a correlation between lung disease,
diabetes, asthma and depression and an increased hazard of
injury. People in the study with multiple health issues had
an even higher risk of injury.
For years, corporate programs have addressed employee
health predominantly by focusing on controlling costs and
not considering the impact on productivity, nor the individual impact on employee well-being. The 2008 study "Health
and Productivity as a Business Strategy" states that viewing
"employee health as a cost to be reduced, rather than an
investment to be managed, needs to be reconsidered in light
of the overwhelming demographic trends toward an older
workforce." The study showed that on average, for every
dollar a company spends on employee medical or pharmacy costs, it absorbs two to four dollars of health-related
productivity costs, commonly in the form of absenteeism.
These costs do not include the safety costs associated with
these conditions. The study concluded that by examining
the relationship between health and productivity, companies

could reduce health risks, increase wellness and performance
and improve quality of life for employees and their families.
While much has been written separately about employee health, safety and productivity, few studies focus on
the correlation between the two. Studies indicate that an
integrated approach yields the most robust outcomes. In
other words - building employee resilience requires the
integration of wellness, occupational health and safety
and employee benefits into one comprehensive program.
Such a holistic approach helps the individual employees by
making them more resilient and better able to cope with
physical, mental and emotional challenges and helps the
employer, who benefits from greater safety, reduced injuries, reduced absences and overall better performance. By
taking a cross-functional approach to health, wellness and
safety, a company can improve the resilience of its greatest
asset: its workforce.
