WILL THE 2020 SULFUR CAP DRIVE INNOVATION?
WinGD, a Swiss developer of low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine
propulsion, sees the 2020 sulfur cap as an opportunity for innovation. In an
article published by Riviera Maritime Media, WinGD's director of research and
development, Konrad Räss, said, "Moving away from burning high-sulfur fuels in
marine propulsion engines yields an opportunity to develop novel technologies for
the combustion chamber and the design of lubricating systems." To that end, the
company is working on new piston-related technologies that boost lubricity. For
more information on WinGD's vision, read its paper, titled "Impact of Sulphur
Cap 2020 on Two-Stroke Engine Tribology Aspects," at bit.ly/2YwJvOp.
SUPPLIER'S STRUGGLE REVEALS POTENTIAL PITFALLS OF
SOFTWARE UPGRADE
Liqui-Moly, a German aftermarket lubricants supplier, experienced significant
difficulties when switching the software used to manage purchases, control
production and organize shipping. In a Just Auto report, Liqui-Moly CEO Ernst
Prost said that what was supposed to simplify processes and reduce costs had the
opposite effect. "I never would have thought that in 2019, a change of software
could send a whole company skidding off the road," he said. Liqui-Moly hopes
to have all issues resolved by the end of the year.
NAM LAUNCHES NEW CLIMATE INITIATIVE
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) has launched a new climate
solutions initiative - the Energy Advance Center. The center aims to fight
climate change, promote environmental sustainability and advance U.S. leadership in the development and deployment of new, transformational energy
solutions. One of the ways the center will do that is by advocating on the
technical, economic and regulatory issues affecting carbon capture, utilization and
storage (CCUS). Ross Eisenberg, NAM vice president of energy and resources
policy, said, "CCUS is one of the most promising tools to address global climate
change, and we're dedicated to developing this technology here in the U.S. -
and to ensuring America continues to lead on this issue."
