A Stronger Foundation

ynamic organizations must strive to continuously evolve, and this
year ILMA went through a notable, positive transformation of its
own by taking significant steps to evolve and expand the ILMA
Foundation.
The ILMA Foundation has played an essential role in the industry for
the past 18 years, providing more than $500,000 in scholarships to 164
deserving students. Over these years, the ILMA Foundation has built a
significant scholarship program, supporting students with much-needed
funds to pursue studies in STEM disciplines and other fields.
Historically, the ILMA Foundation was solely the scholarship program,
governed by the Scholarship Committee, an entity of the ILMA Board. The
great success and growth of the ILMA Foundation Scholarship Program
has led to discussion among board members and other stakeholders of how
we could evolve the mission of ILMA Foundation to further support the
ever-advancing needs of our industry in terms of research and education.
Over the past year or two, we have begun the process to evolve the ILMA
Foundation by: 1) separating the ILMA Foundation as its own independent
entity, with separate leadership intended to support ILMA; 2) rewriting
the bylaws to expand the board of governors to include supplier member
representation as well as manufacturing member representation; 3) holding
the first official ILMA Foundation Board meeting in April at the Hotel Del
Coronado; and lastly, 4) holding a strategic planning session in June at the
ILMA offices in Washington, D.C.
The ILMA Foundation Board of Governors, along with support of the
ILMA staff, has been working to create a strong mission and strategic plan
that will benefit the mission and values of ILMA and the lubricants industry.
We are working to grow the scholarship program to provide more, larger
and varied scholarships while expanding the Foundation's focus to include
an emphasis on research, member education and other valuable initiatives.
Some examples of what has been discussed include events such as "train the
trainer," "scholarship funds for vocational programs" and industry training.
During our strategic-planning meeting in June, Board members discussed
ways that the Foundation could facilitate internships, with ILMA serving
as a clearinghouse to help facilitate the two-way relationships between
businesses and students. The Foundation also plans to create a safety awareness education program that will include training, informational posters, a
newsletter and opportunities for sharing best practices.
