IntroductIon lesson procedure motivation: plusses and deltas (5-10 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDEnTS WILL REFLECT On 10TH GRADE HIGHS AnD LOWS . Create a chart on the board or chart paper with two columns . Write a "plus" and a "delta" symbol on the top as below: + Welcome students . Ask your students the following questions: * Who feels ready to be an 11th grader? * How many of you are happy to be juniors, and not sophomores or freshman? * What do you think it means to be a junior? What makes your 11th grade unique? * Is it going to be harder or easier than last year? Ask students to take a moment and silently think about some of the things they really like or feel positive about from the 9th and/or 10th grade . maybe something fun that happened in class or a great moment that happened outside of school . Ask students to share and record their responses on the "plus" side of the chart you created before class . Then, ask students to think about things they would like to change about their 9th or 10th grade experience . These could be areas in need of improvement, classes they wish they could have done better in, etc . List these under the "delta" column . Analyze the Plus/Delta chart complete with the student responses . What does this completed chart SAY about your class and your experiences last year? Is there anything surprising to you?
