LAUNCH GRADE 11: TAKE ACTION! field trip to the busy, chaotic office of a successful internet start-up. My husband's coworkers were so excited to meet my students, they offered to host after-school SAT prep for the kids once a month for a year! My kids loved the look and feel of the office so much, five of them decided on the spot to major in computer engineering so they could grow up to work in such a cool place. None of this would have happened if I hadn't asked! provide structure and supplies to help adults prepare Have handouts or other materials available to help adults know what you'd like them to do, and what your expectations are. If this is not possible, try to talk to your guests ahead of time about your expectations. the more organized you are, the more comfortable your guests will be. be firm about expectations Both adults and students need to know that there are rules and expectations for behavior during activities and events. Everyone should keep it professional and follow any school procedures for permission slips when traveling, security protocols when visiting the school building, etc. follow-up Be sure to thank your guests for their service. providing adult visitors with thank-you notes or emails is a great way to let them know they are appreciated. Student-voiced appreciation is often an effective and meaningful addition to such follow-up. Share examples of student work generated from the visit, or have students write thank-you notes. your guests will feel appreciated and will be more likely to stay connected to your class in the future. 54 LESSon 6: ALUMnI pAnEL
