Hood College- Navigation, Summer 2009 - 34

W W W.HOOD.EDU agenda was to interest the girls in attending Hood.” The Kraskes have six grandchildren, from nine months to 21 years. For the last four years Barbara has been tutoring history, English, writing and education at Howard Community College. Ann Montesano Ellis enjoys judging flower shows. She spent June and July at Conesus Lake, N.Y., attended a mini-Hood reunion at Betty Kutz Mager’s in York, Pa., and traveled on an18-day trip to Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands. In October Ann campaigned for Obama and is thrilled by his election. She has traveled to Indiana, Texas and Florida with family. She left the reunion planning to go on to the Senior Olympics in California. Judy Moreland Granger enjoyed a wonderful trip to Spain with her cousin Ethel Kintigh Spence ’62. They stayed in Torremolinos on the Mediterranean, visited the Alhambra in Granada, toured Gibralter and spent a weekend in Tangier, Morocco. Gail Mulliken Painter spent her winter suffering and recovering from mononucleosis. Her doctor told her she is the most “mature” person he has ever heard of having mono. Before her illness Gail enjoyed an extended stay with her daughter’s family in Australia. Gail’s son Greg and his wife and family of four girls have moved within 20 minutes of her home in Mukilteo, Wash., so she can spend more time with them. It has been three years since Roger passed away. It has not been easy but Gail has lots of old and new friends. She has resumed participating in her church choir and the Rotary Club. Gail is an elder in her church and still works on “selective” travel arranging from home. She spent February 2008 in Florida with Roger’s sisters and brothers then met Cheryl in Maui for a mother-daughter week. Next came several weeks at the Cassellas’ cabin on Puget Sound with their family of five and lots of relatives and old friends. In August Gail went on a 12-day riverboat cruise on the Danube from Bucharest to Budapest with three special friends and in October she went back East to celebrate her brother’s 75th birthday. Gail saw her cousin Carol Byrne Coulthurst last October and suggested that she come to the class reunion. She did! Jeannette Phelps did not make it to the reunion but continues to enjoy cultural events in Baltimore. She is getting ready for cataract surgery. Rachel Ravey Johnson remains devoted to the woods, adventure and the struggling environment. She and Carl do a twice-yearly wilderness canoe/kayak trip in northern Canada. They are both training to be master naturalists for the state of Virginia. Rachel is on temporary leave from her college teaching job and having fun. Myra Silberstein Goldgeier participated in the reunion chapel service by leading a Hebrew prayer with responses from the congregation. Carolynne Veazey Lathrop missed the reunion because she is teaching a summer school course in children’s literature for the Univ. of Dubuque education department. She has been working as a librarian in this field for 23 years and she was thrilled to be asked to teach it. Carolynne sent lots of pictures. Joan Victor Boos and John enjoyed a visit from their son and his family from Durham, N.C., for Memorial Day. They took their two grandchildren to see the new baby elephant at the Columbus Zoo. Pat Wever Knoll had to miss the reunion because of her husband’s open-heart surgery and ensuing complications. Before Ron’s heart attack the Knolls enjoyed a wonderful cruise from Florida through the Panama Canal to Costa Rica, Columbia, Mexico and back to California. Pat’s starring role as Liza in the Class of 1959’s sophomore review was highlighted in the reunion slide show. Many of the pictures from that production were sent in by the director Nancy Rogers Huntsinger. Della Wilson Holtzapple wrote that she spent most of her time at Hood on a piano bench in Brodbeck and has “simply moved from bench to bench” the rest of her life—from Hood to Peabody to Curtis, and teaching in between. She is still performing. Her oldest daughter teaches art history at the Univ. of Pittsburgh and her youngest tutors athletes at Syracuse Univ. The two of them have given her five grandsons. Dell and her husband were married 48 years in June. She says, “We met at Franklin & Marshall and sadly I drew the short straw as to which 50th we would attend. I will miss all of you.” Sue Wilson Officer had back surgery in October and recovery has been painful and complicated. Akiko Yamamoto Fasolo attended the reunion accompanied by her younger daughter Mina who entered into all activities enthusiastically. Anne Wilson Heuisler: I relished a pre-reunion warm-up with Gayle Hamilton Blakeslee, Judy Moreland Granger, Gail Mulliken Painter, Carole Jones Rogers and Mary-Lou Trout Haddad for four days in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Ed Holman, Nina McGlinn Holman’s widower, met us for lunch on Kent Island, introducing his new wife Linda. The reunion was truly wonderful! Thanks to all who participated and all who were with us in spirit! We remembered you. Please send in your pictures for a post-reunion continuing collection as well as your news and e-mail addresses. E-mail me if you would like to view class slide shows. Participation: 45.45% Total Class Dollars: $33,287 Suzanne Brown Wellcome 321 Stafford Ave. Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA 92007 (760) 753-8026 swellcome@cox.net Participation: 53.9% Total Class Dollars: $62,859 Sally Jo Bruch Sherrill 727 Genesee St. Annapolis, MD 21401 (410) 263-5158 Our condolences to Judy Klein Schumacher whose sister Linda Klein Champlin ’62 died in Nov. 12, 2007. Our condolences to the family of Annette Edelstein who died Feb. 14, 2009, in Allentown, Pa. Lyn Adams Sprinkle writing from Paradise (aka Florida) got together with Mary Jane Evans Hahn, Lynne Linzey Barnes, Marge Teague Turner and Brenda Sheaffer Hillard for a hooting and hollering lunch. Nancy echoes that and claims that “snow birds” in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of the West Coast of Florida once again this year had a great time having super lunch dates. She invites anyone in the area to connect and join the group! I think the two most fun East Coast Hood places must be Florida and Rehoboth beach where, Anne Bierstein Grenfell writes that Mary Anne Fleetwood, Mary Drewal Regan, Carol Handwerk Ziegler, Jan Dobbs Pedersen, Sue Meeks Freeman, Lou Huebl Moran, and Janet Spaulding Nunn get together twice a year and are now gathering ideas for our 50th reunion. Anne had a total hip replacement and is recuperating uneventfully. Ann Corderman Helton leads a busy life as the moderator/administrative officer for Webster Congregational Christian Church in Havre de Grace, Md.; president of the New Harford Democratic Club; and chair of the CASA board, a court-based advocacy program for protecting at-risk children. She and her husband have six grandchildren ranging from age 1 to 27, keep a large ornamental garden and raise Dorset sheep for their meat for customers. They are planning a trip to Costa Rica this December for exploring their preserves and natural beauty. She is happy to report the 93rd birthday of her father and her mother’s upcoming 92nd. Carole Gorchoff Paul spent a few weeks in India traveling with friends. She encourages anyone considering India to “go!” The trip was one of her best travel experiences—culturally enriching, architecturally awesome and the people are wonderful. Great spirit. (I second that enthusiastically!) On the home front it is summer in East Hampton renting a house with two friends. She has a brand new (two-week-old) grandchild and four other wee ones under 4. From famine to feast! Janet Spaulding Nunn’s daughter left Frederick to move to Murfreesboro, Tenn., with her new husband, and Janet and Jack are moving to San Diego this summer to live near their other daughter there. Marty Kaiser Canner was diagnosed with breast cancer in March and will be starting chemotherapy soon to be followed by radiation therapy. We all wish her well and send positive energies to her as she goes through her treatment. Her oldest grandson
