Hood College- Navigation, Summer 2009 - 47
48 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2009 pampering ourselves at the spa, walking around the grounds and enjoying plenty of food and drink, especially by the fireplace. Saturday night we bagged a nice dinner in the restaurant and had a room service picnic in one of the rooms, reminiscing and laughing for hours. From what I can tell from all of your responses, all of us have had a great time celebrating our half-century milestone! Valerie Cerrone Nelson (vcn10@aol.com) wrote that she is back in school, entering SUNY Downstate Medical in Brooklyn for a master’s degree in midwifery. For the past year and a half she’s been working as a postpartum doula, helping new moms and families settle in with their babies. In late spring she participated in her first birth as a birth doula acting as a labor coach providing emotional and physical support through the process. While she hasn’t given up her career as a real estate broker, the terrible market has given her an opportunity to pursue some exciting career paths. Her daughter just graduated from Emerson College in Boston in three years and her son finished 10th grade. She lost her father, age 93, in April after a brief illness. She keeps in touch with other Hood alums, especially Cathyann McCann Ray and Melissa Warner Stump on Facebook. Anita Juliano Harvey (princessmommy89@yahoo. com) wrote to me while working the checkout desk at the Whitaker Campus Center during Reunion Weekend 2009! She’s lived in the Frederick area since fall 2007 and was working at Hood until January 2009 when she joined the student development staff at Frederick Community College. She stays active at Hood as chair of the Council of Alumnae and Students Together and finds great joy working on the ring scholarship and legacy ring programs. Her son Eric will be a junior at Shepherd Univ. in the fall. She and Michael are searching for property and hope to start construction on their dream log home very soon. Sue Early Noriega (snoriegaRD@aol.com) was one of many who lost her job at the end of 2008 but in April she started as director of food service and nutrition in a continuing care retirement community. She also started an e-coaching business, www.yourwebdietitian.com, and she’s writing an e-book. She and Steve became empty-nesters when their youngest son John didn’t come home for the summer from college. He’ll be a junior at Philadelphia Univ.; and their oldest son Steve has a degree in textile engineering and an MBA, and hopes to find a job in his field soon. He is currently a store manager for Hollister/Abercrombie and Fitch. Paula Moran (paula@summithistory. org) writes that they are still in the process of moving the family to Norfolk, Va. Her husband Hank moved there in mid-February to lead Nauticus National Maritime Center while she remains behind in Akron, Ohio, to sell the house. She hopes to get a job in the animal welfare area, either with the City of Norfolk or some other groups. Her son Collin is in the Coast Guard and going to school for advanced electronics training in Yorktown. Daughter Chelsea is studying pre-law at the Univ. of Akron and intends to work in animal welfare law following graduation from law school. Betsy Grasso Sahagun (betsysellshomes@lnf.com) is a realtor in northern Virginia and is available to assist any Hood alumni or faculty member with their real estate needs in the area. Whether you are looking to buy or rent she guarantees a successful, stress-free experience. Her daughter Ally just finished her freshman year at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington. Ingrid Mues (muesing@cox.net) has been living in the northern Virginia area since graduation and working in computer security for the same employer for 26 years. Her children— Dana, 20, and Ian, 22—are both in college and for her 50th birthday celebration this summer she is going on an extended vacation to enjoy one of her current passions—hiking. Thanks to Debbie Winther Ferrill, she is staying two weeks at her retirement home in the Swiss Alps. Unfortunately Debbie will be back in Singapore during that time so they won’t see each other. From there she’ll drive with a friend through Germany visiting family and end in Budapest to visit Dana who is spending her fall semester there studying math. The celebrations just keep on going. Hope to see many of you at our 30th reunion next June. First of all, a huge thank you for those of you who answered my postcard for more class news. It was great to hear and reconnect with so many of you. Karen Sikes Plá is living right here in Germantown, Md., (I’m sure we have crossed paths at Home Depot!) and has worked at NIH for more than 22 years. She and her husband Wilfred are excited about traveling to Ireland this summer for her big birthday celebration. She enjoys cooking with her husband and a wide variety of outdoor activities. Linda Wilce Marmer M.S. ’90 is also living in Germantown, Md., and is still working at Sodexo. She has put her registered dietitian degree to work. With all the new food requirements she is extremely busy updating nutrient and ingredient information on several thousand products. Outside of work she keeps busy bicycling, walking, hiking and attending baseball games with her husband. Linda is having surgery on her knee this summer and we wish her a speedy recovery. Florida must be the hot spot for celebrating the big “5-0.” Lindy Small celebrated hers in Marathon Key, Fla., with family and friends. Her 2-year-old daughter Morgan keeps her busy along with her position at BG&E. She said Sharon Gravatt Kulesz celebrated with a family trip to Florida in May and Shellie Bolger Morris is celebrating by graduating from nursing school. Leigh Moomaw McBride celebrated her 50th in Florida with girlfriends for a long weekend. They had so much fun someone called security to the condo for too much noise. Who says 50 year olds can’t party! She has been training for a marathon in Lake Placid, N.Y., and raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Diane Martensen Ippolito is having a big year. She will celebrate her 25th anniversary in October, and her oldest son graduated from college and is getting married in July. Her daughter is a junior in college and her youngest son is in high school and a star runner. She reconnected with Caroline Peck Medley ’82 on Facebook when she discovered their oldest children share a mutual interest in Dagorhir. I (Lynn Marzulli White) ran into Cindy Hancock Weller at the reunion luncheon. She was there with her mother Julia Allen Hancock ’47 and classmates from 1947. She commented on how those fun-loving Hood girls are in their 80s and hopes we can have such panache 30 years from now. She ran into Rebecca Barnes C ’08 at the luncheon who just completing her certificate of thanatology at Hood. Cindy is enjoying her job as an instructional assistant with special needs children and spending time with her family. Naomi Bergwerk just earned her MBA from Fordham Univ. Maggie Park is working at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind and will serve as the interim president this upcoming school year. She loves the residential setting where she works because it reminds her of Hood. She is back in school pursuing her doctorate. She has one daughter left at home who will be a senior in high school. Her other three daughters have all graduated college with various degrees. Patty ScasserraLester will be celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary in October with a trip to one of their favorite destinations. Her two sons are busy with school. Christopher is a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and younger son Matthew is in high school and will be sailing in the Chesapeake this summer. In May, she spent a weekend with Mary Shorter Fahimi ’80 in Wildwood getting caught up. Mary Thompson Calhoun is living in western North Carolina with her husband, three corgis and a corgi-wannabe. She stays in touch with roommates Laura Schauer Schauer ’83, Sue Murch McLoughlin and Eve Erwin Deitch who are all doing well and staying busy. It’s been more than 10 years since I heard from Karen Lambert Leh who hasn’t come up for air since having her triplets. They are all going into their sophomore year in high school. Can you imagine three driving at the same time? Alex and Trevor play football and wrestle and Elizabeth is a field hockey player. Karen is heading to the D.C. area this summer with her daughter and we can’t wait to get caught
