The professional development grants were established in  by the board of associates and renamed in  to acknowledge the generosity of the late Robert C. Art, photos, postcards, college yearbooks, a Campus Day doll, a 1925 song book, blazers and publications dating as far back as the 1930s, were among the donated items. The Hood College History Museum, in the Beneficial-Hodson Library and Technology Center, opened in 2007, providing a venue to showcase Hood’s historic memorabilia. One of the oldest donated items, an 1845 certificate awarded to Mariette Staley Doub, was discovered in the archives of the Maryland School for the Deaf. Doub, who graduated in 1846 from the Frederick Female Seminary, was the mother of Florence W. Doub, who taught art at Hood and MSD. Hood, formerly the Woman’s College of Frederick, leased the buildings of Frederick Female Seminary. One of the most unusual items was a brass doorknob from Meyran Hall. “It accidentally fell off when I graduated,” said Hope Bober Corrigan ’81 of Ellicott City, Md. Betsy McCain McAlpine ’51, a member of the board of trustees, donated a large antique hand-painted metal tray that features a painting of the then Joseph Henry Apple Library. The tray, painted by the late Frederick County artist and former faculty member Helen L. Smith, was given to her mother, Betty Apple McCain ’23, by her classmates in 1955 in recognition of her service to the College. McAlpine has previously donated a number of Apple family memorabilia to the museum.
