8 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2009 news Parrish Sixth in 100-meter Dash at ’09 NCAA Championships Senior Jessica Parrish (above) of the women’s track and field team placed sixth in her heat of the -meter dash (.) at the  NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Marietta College May . The top eight runners from the event’s three heats advanced to the event finals. Parrish, the Capital Athletic Conference women’s track and field athlete of the year and fi rst Blazer student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA championships in an individual sport, ran in the third and fi nal heat of the afternoon but missed making finals by . seconds. Men’s Lax Earn First Program Win, Defeats Griffins 12-7 The men’s lacrosse team made history Feb. , earning the program’s fi rst victory in  games dating back to its inception in , by defeating the visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins, -, at Thomas Athletic Field. The Blazers’  goals were the most in program history, eclipsing the previous record of  set last season. Sofiane Lazar (above) registered a hat trick for the Blazers while Nick Spicer and Corey Roberts each netted a pair. Kris Miner, Michael Matteson, Dominique Shorter, Troy Hubbard and John Butterfield all got into the scoring column for Hood. Hector Montoya won -of- face-offs and goalkeeper Nick O’Brien made a career-high  saves in the triumph. Elkaim Sets Program Record for Tennis Singles’ Wiins Junior Jillian Elkaim (above) set a program record for singles wins on April  in a match with St. Mary’s College (Md.). The junior from Boyds, Md., had little trouble with Michelle Compton at the No. spot, winning -, -, for her school-record setting th victory of the season. She eclipsed the previous mark of  set by Gina Long ’ during the - season. Elkaim finished the - campaign with a singles record of - and went - against CAC foes. Women’s Lacrosse Breaks Program Record with 9-2 Win Over Ferrum The women’s lacrosse team broke the program record for victories in a season April  after defeating Ferrum College, -, in nonconference action. Hood finished the season with a - nonconference mark and won its eighth game of the season, eclipsing the single-season record of seven by the  squad. Danielle Sgro Selected for MACDA Post-Graduate Scholarship Recent graduate Danielle Sgro, a four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams, was one of three winners of a post-graduate scholarship from the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (MACDA). A native of Indiana, Pa., Sgro served as team captain in both sports. She was selected four times as cross country team’s most valuable runner. She also earned three all-Capital Athletic Conference citations, two in cross country and one in track and field. The Hood Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a magna cum laude graduate, Sgro was a political science major with a minor in English literature and history. She plans to attend law school with a health care concentration and someday work either as a health policy analyst, journalist or health care attorney. Scrappy Effort Leads to 5-4 Win Over Stevenson in CAC Tournament The fi fth-seeded men’s tennis team came from behind in three singles matches to clinch a hard-fought - victory over fourth-seeded Stevenson University April  in the opening round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The win was Hood’s fi rst in men’s tennis in the CAC tournament. After dropping the fi rst sets at fi rst, third and fourth singles, Carter Reitman, Mike Hardman and Andrew Blowe all rallied to force a third set and emerged victorious. Andrew’s older brother, David, also needed a tiebreaker in the second set for a win at second singles. Blackwell Becomes Women’s Lacrosse Point Leader Sophomore Kelsey Blackwell of the women’s lacrosse team racked up  goals and  assists for  points to become the program’s single-season scoring leader. Blackwell took over the top spot from Cheryl Banks ‘, whose  points stood as the standard since . Her  assists also topped Banks’ mark of  from the same year. A starter in all  games, the native of Gaithersburg, Md., is now tied for sixth on Hood’s career scoring chart with  points.
