AFP Conference - 10

PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOPS Introduction to the AFP/Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University Diploma in Fundraising Program This half-day pre-conference session will take place on: Saturday, April 10, 2010 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. AFP is delighted to announce the launch of a new professional qualification in fundraising! Developed in partnership with the world class Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, the new Diploma will be the first academically rigorous qualification to be offered to the profession. Designed for those new to fundraising or those looking to broaden their experience to gain a more senior role, the Diploma will offer a thorough grounding in topics such as donor behavior, fundraising planning, donor retention and loyalty, direct response fundraising, e-fundraising, major gifts, bequests/planned giving and institutional fundraising (i.e. corporate and foundations). It will also examine the role of fundraising in society, practicing good stewardship, adopting high ethical standards and fostering the public trust. While the official launch of the program is slated for August 2010, this introductory session will provide an overview of the syllabus, give you the opportunity to meet the course tutors and open access to some of the material the course will offer including answers to: What exactly is philanthropic psychology and how should we be using it to grow giving? What individual and social influences match behavior and how can we use this knowledge to improve fundraising performance in our own organizations? This session will be presented by Adrian Sargeant, Ph.D., Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis, Indianapolis, Ind. A4: Introduction to the AFP/Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University Diploma in Fundraising Program (½ day) fees: $100 (with a full conference registration) $200 (without a full conference registration) Planning to Keep Your Donors This half-day pre-conference session will take place on: Sunday, April 11, 2010 9:00 a.m. – Noon Increasing loyalty by as little as 10 percent can improve the lifetime value of a database up to 200 percent. In this session we explore the reasons underlying the terrible levels of loyalty nonprofits currently experience and critically examine what we might do to improve on them. By the end of the session all participants should be able to: Name the three key drivers of donor loyalty Identify concrete ways in which their own fundraising program could be modified to affect these key drivers Measure each of these drivers in their own organization Describe a range of key loyalty metrics Compare their practice with best and “standard” industry practice The session will draw heavily on academic and practitioner research and introduce case material from the commercial and nonprofit sectors to suggest a variety of very practical ways in which donor loyalty can be managed and enhanced. This session will be presented by John E. Joslin, CFRE, Donor2/Campus Management, Charlotte, N.C.; Adrian Sargeant, Ph.D., Indiana University— Purdue University Indianapolis, Indianapolis, Ind.; Joshua Birkholz, DonorCast by Bentz Whaley Flessner, Minneapolis, Minn.; and Wesley E.
