E D U C AT I O N A L S E S S I O N S There are two and a half days of education and training in 21 tracks that will inspire and motivate you and give you ideas to take back to your organization and put into immediate practice. Advanced Fundraising Leadership Track Powered by ACFRE This track is designed for individuals who aspire to or hold the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) credential and for other experienced professionals who want to discuss philosophical as well as practical issues facing fundraising professionals. These dynamic sessions, focusing on ethics and management of nonprofit organizations, and advanced leadership skills, will be led by one or more expert speakers, with debate and dialogue facilitated by ACFREs. Sessions are approved for credit toward the ACFRE leadership, management or ethics education requirements. A Debate and Dialogue: Leadership Dysfunction: Why Can’t We Get “Board Development” Right? In the nonprofit sector, we believe that boards should govern in a certain way, but it appears that only a few do. All too frequently we hear “our board isn’t very active in fundraising” or “we don’t have a very active board.” Most of us have tried the training sessions, the workshops, the books, only to find ourselves in the same place. Something is not working. Are our expectations unrealistic? Is our board governance structure archaic? Is dysfunction a normal function of group behavior? A Debate and Dialogue: Educating the Next Generation of Development Professionals: But, NOT THE SAME OLD WAY Since the beginning, fundraising training has largely focused on the experiential “how-to” methods of generating gifts. More and more, newcomers, who enter our profession mid-career from the corporate sector, are challenging our “how-to” methods. They want evidence that our approaches work: they want more science, proven results, research-based knowledge, and metric strategies. Clearly, we are at a crossroads in the way we educate the next generation about “what” and “why” we do what we do. The rapid and expansive globalization of fundraising into North America, South America, Europe and Asia has already influenced and enriched our profession. Where do we go from here? This begs the question: Should ACFRE education and certification be an international initiative?
