E D U C AT I O N A L S E S S I O N S Assessing and Building Your Development Teams’ Skills Joining a new institution as supervisor of a development team presents many challenges including assessing the individual skill sets of team members and the group as a whole. How do you, as a new supervisor, quickly gain a perspective of each development officer’s style, personality and attention to the business of donor development? How effective and consistent are development officers in telling the institution’s story? How do you create a platform for learning that capitalizes on individual and team strengths and addresses skill deficiencies? How do you introduce new skills that improve individual and team effectiveness without seeming punitive? How do you inject fun into learning? This session provides a case study approach in assessing develoment officer skills and effectiveness and offers easily adaptable tools to customize the exercise for your institution. In addition, you’ll learn how to craft a development training program that works for your situation. Susan Martz, Rice University, Houston, Texas Mid-level 3-6 years, Senior level 7-9 years Major Gifts Sponsored by WealthEngine Transformational Philanthropy: Entrepreneurs and Nonprofits This presentation is based on Lisa Dietlin’s recently published book of the same title. General Interest A Topic We Love To Hate: Putting Your Gift Policies In Order During this interactive session, we will discuss how to create or update your gift policies. Topics to be covered include: gift acceptance, counting and valuation policies; binding and non-binding gift agreements; state registration to do business; state registration to solicit; and state registration to issue gift annuities. Bring copies of your own policies for easy reference. Brian Sagrestano, J.D., CFRE, Gift Planning Development LLC, New Hartford, N.Y. General Interest Setting the Stage for a Successful Major Gifts Program This session will cover the basics you need to launch a major gifts campaign. It is perfect for those new to major gifts who want to do it right from the start, or for those experienced practitioners looking for new ways to improve their major gift strategies.
