E D U C AT I O N A L S E S S I O N S Special Events Walk-a-thon From A to Z: Aggressively Seeding Your Donor Pyramid At $2 billion annually, walk-a-thon and other pledgebased fundraisers comprise the largest segment of the nation’s special-event fundraising industry. That’s because walks and other “a-thons” have proven to be unsurpassed leadership, visibility and donor acquisition vehicles. In this session, we will examine the unique strengths and benefits of both “populist” and “elite” pledge events, as well as some of the most successful “a-thons” in the nation and their best practices. This session will cover everything from goalsetting and sponsorship development to outreach and donor cultivation. We will also examine how these events translate into constituency development, and help their nonprofit sponsors leverage government funding and even change public behavior. Steven H. Biondolillo, Biondolillo Associates, Wellesley, Mass. This session will help nonprofits keep the government out of the business of religion and religion out of the business of politics. To uphold the Constitution’s boundaries between religion and government, religious charities must understand and adhere to the requirement that these organizations obey Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination in hiring staff when religious institutions spend government money. Religious institutions should also establish separate 501(c)(3) organizations to handle government grants. We will examine contemporary issues at the nexus of fundraising, government and religion.
