E D U C AT I O N A L S E S S I O N S How to Harness Twitter and Other Social Media for Your Fundraising Using examples of how early adopters of social media have raised funds via microblogs such as Twitter, this session will teach microblogging tools and basic skills, how to craft and deliver your message at 140 characters at a time and harness the power of social media’s hottest tools. Additionally, participants will learn how to keep their constituency informed and how to incorporate these tools into development and strategic plans. David Tinker, CFRE, ACHIEVA, Pittsburgh, Pa. Entry level 0-2 years, General Interest Building Volunteer Capacity to Attain and Sustain Greatness This session will explore key elements needed to build leadership capacity for fund development and create the best possible environment for volunteers to contribute consistently to mission success. Recruiting, training and effectively deploying volunteer energy and talent can be the difference between doing well and being truly great. Using the FIRE model… Focus: Clarity of purpose Implementation: Provide training/tools to do the job Responsibility: Create a culture of responsibility Enjoyment: Encourage unabashed joy This session will challenge participants to assess the clarity of goals, whether long or short term. It will enable participants to determine if their organization has given its volunteers the capacity to effectively contribute to the implementation of those goals. The session will offer practical tools to build a culture of personal responsibility for fundraising, leading to peak performance. Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of lighting a FIRE for success is a commitment to enjoyment, or unabashed joy. The session will discuss why such enthusiasm is critical to an organization and how leaders at all levels can harness that energy for mission fulfillment. J. Thomas (Tom) Viall, LEVELheaded, Rockville, Md. Caroline Bolas, LEVELheaded, Rockville, Md. Entry level 0-2 years, Mid-level 3-6 years Working with Volunteers Finding, Recruiting, Motivating and Training Fundraising Volunteers to Achieve Your Mission This session will help participants through the process of identifying, qualifying and recruiting enough fundraising volunteers to achieve their organization’s mission. Where to find volunteers, how to identify the right ones and how best to recruit them are addressed as an easily replicated process. We will develop several volunteer campaign structures that will enable one to manage many dozens, even hundreds of volunteers. We will discuss and share best campaign practices in working with volunteers—how to motivate them, train them and make them accountable; how to manage them so they don’t know they are being managed, keep them on schedule and make them successful; how we re-energize volunteers who need it and how to “fire” or redirect a volunteer; and how to recognize them, celebrate their success and make them so successful they will want to come back year after year to help your organization achieve its mission. Lawrence Crouch, CFRE, Boy Scouts of America National Council, Irving, Texas Entry level 0-2 years, Mid-level 3-6 years, Senior level 7-9 years Volunteers and Fundraising Hear from The American Red Cross National Headquarters experts on working with volunteers in fundraising ventures.
