8 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2010 Blazers News Athletic Department Awarded NCAA Grant for Peer Mentoring Program Hood’s athletic department was awarded a National Collegiate Athletic Association student-athlete development grant in support of the SPURS (Students Providing Understanding and ResourceS) program. This initiative connects upperclass studentathletes with new student-athletes in a peer mentoring relationship. Jay Butler, assistant director of athletics for academic enrichment, collaborated with Ted Chase, Ph.D., associate dean of students, to write the grant. It is one of only 20 awarded to 447 NCAA Division III colleges and universities. Nineteen sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes were paired with first-year field hockey, soccer, cross country and volleyball student-athletes, whose seasons began almost as soon as they arrived on campus for the fall semester. The initial impetus was to provide support for the new student-athletes, who had to quickly adjust to balancing an obligation to their sport with the rigor of college academics, and who may have been living away from home for the first time. The grant also enabled the program to bring Hollis Conway, the American indoor record holder in the high jump and two-time Olympic medalist, to the College in December. An inspirational speaker, Conway met with the SPURS to offer them perspectives on the roles they play as mentors, role models and student-athletes, and then addressed the Hood community and area high school coaches and athletes about overcoming obstacles and achieving one’s maximum potential. Men’s Basketball Advances to Championship Game of Pride of Maryland Tournament The Blazer men’s basketball team advanced to the title game of the Pride of Maryland Tournament presented by M&T Bank for the second time in three years. But the Blazers settled for the runner-up trophy once again, falling 89-77 to No. 20 St. Mary’s College (Md.). Sophomores Brenden Straughn and Tory Wilson represented Hood on the alltournament team. Equestrian Rider Qualifies for Regionals Equestrian team captain Amy Thompson placed first in the walk-trot division and earned seven individual points at a show at Goucher College in October. Having accumulated 35 points in the walktrot division, Thompson will now regularly compete in the beginning walk-trot-canter division. By “pointing out” of a division, Thompson qualified to ride in the Zone 4, Region I regional competition at the walk-trot level April 3 at The College of William and Mary. She is the first Hood College rider in four years to make regionals. Sixty-one Student-Athletes Selected for Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team The Capital Athletic Conference announced that 61 Hood College student-athletes were named to the 2008-09 CAC all-academic team for maintaining a 3.2 grade point average or higher throughout the academic year. Of the 61 selections to the all-academic team, 17 different sports were represented. The women’s track and field team led the way with eight members, while softball and field hockey came in a close second with seven honorees apiece. Additionally, 26 student-athletes were repeat selections from the 2007-08 allacademic team, and seven student-athletes have been named to the all-academic team all three years that Hood has been a member of the conference. Those seven student-athletes are William Andrews ’10, men’s cross country and track and field; Mike Cahill ’10, men’s track and field; Ben Caplins ’09, cross country; Caitlin Erickson ’09, women’s tennis; Tomilayo Komolafe ’09, men’s track and field; Danielle Sgro ’09, women’s cross country and track and field; and Katie Thomas ’09, women’s track and field. Cross Country Championship Meet Hosted by Hood The women’s and men’s cross country teams served as the host for the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference cross country championships at Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville, Md., Nov. 7. All nine CAC member institutions and nearly 180 student-athletes participated in the championship, as the conference celebrated its 20th anniversary. Hood proudly hosted its second CAC championship final and first involving all nine colleges and universities in the league. Head coach Brent Ayer assembled a crew of more than 50 volunteers to assist with the event, which received rave reviews from both the conference commissioner and the eight CAC head coaches. Also of note, Jamie Bingaman (above), a sophomore on the women’s soccer team, garnered a perfect 4.0 GPA during her freshman year, the only Hood student-athlete to do so.
