W W W.HOOD.EDU World-renowned philosopher Peter Singer is just one of numerous notable speakers who come to campus each year to lecture and lead discussions on contemporary and sometimes controversial issues. SURPRISING Where can one find world-renowned speakers presenting lectures and presiding over classroom discussions? Or students, along with their professors, excavating artifacts in an archaeological dig in Turkey or exploring coastal environments? Where do students conduct cutting-edge ecology-, disease- and biofuel-related research and nationally recognized artists exhibit their work and direct workshops? If this sounds like something found only at a large university, think again. At Hood, students have these opportunities and more, thanks in part to a cadre of dedicated professors who work hard to make these experiences available to students and to the Hood and Frederick communities. Since 2004, students have been accompanying Jennifer Ross, Ph.D., associate professor of art, to the ancient archaeological site Çadir Höyük in Turkey. There, as members of an international team, they excavate for artifacts to determine how people lived, what their culture was like and how that changed over time. A strong advocate of hands-on learning, Ross believes it’s essential that students learn firsthand about archaeological fieldwork and methods, including excavation, cleaning, sorting, studying, drawing and photographing the excavated objects. “It’s a great experience for students who are interested in archaeology and in other cultures,” said Ross. “It’s important for them to gain that experience before they decide whether they want to pursue further studies in archaeology in graduate school.”
