By Nancy Gillece ’81, vice president for intuitional advancement Gymnasium Donations Grow Hood has received a number of significant donations in support of the proposed gymnasium, including gifts from William H. Browning, Jr.; The Delaplaine Foundation, Inc.; M. Fredrica Godshalk, M.D. ’65; A. Betsy McCain McAlpine ’51, a member of the Hood College Board of Trustees; Kathryn Z. Nicodemus H’05 and Charles A. Nicodemus H’05, an emeritus member of the Hood College Board of Trustees; Beulah Munshower Sommer ’44, an emerita member of the Hood College Board of Associates; and Olivia G. White, Ph.D., vice president for student life and dean of students at Hood. Gifts Strengthen Endowed Scholarships and Prizes Hood College continues to receive support for new and established scholarships and prizes, with gifts from alumnae and alumni, friends, parents, corporations and foundations. Margaret Lewis Christensen ’52 recently established the Margaret Loudon Lewis Scholarship Fund in memory of her mother, “a woman of courage and integrity.” The annual award will be given to a deserving student demonstrating academic success. Washington Gas has established The Washington Gas Scholarship, to be awarded to a student from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region. Gifts to already established scholarships have been received from: Martha Shortiss Allen ’59 for The Martha Shortiss Allen ’59 Scholarship Fund; Sue M. Benitez for The Sue and Ross Benitez Scholarship; Sara Robinson Bitler for The Lowe-Bitler Scholarship; Elizabeth B. Delaplaine H’08 and George B. Delaplaine Jr., H’08 for the Virginia Shaver Harshman ’41 Scholarship Fund; Joan Esselen Foot ’69, a member of the Hood College Board of Trustees, for The Esselen Family Scholarship Fund; Leonard P. Harris, P’84, an emeritus member of the Hood College Board of Trustees, for The Lorie Harris Morrell ’84 Scholarship; the Arlene Utz Hollinger Foundation for The Arlene Utz Hollinger ’37 Scholarship; Ruth Whitaker Holmes ’55, H’93, an emerita member of the Hood College Board of Trustees, for The Martha Engle McNeil ’31 of Frostburg, Md., was a retired reading specialist with the Allegany County school system and the oldest living member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at the time of her death at 98. College Receives Bequests Hood recently received bequests from four alumnae, all of whom were devoted to their alma mater and recognized the value of planned gifts. Roberta Maxwell Gilfillan ’44 of Lakeworth, Fla., a home economics major, was active in a number of civic organizations. Her husband, the late J. Alex Gilfillan, taught music at Hood during the mid-40s. Dorothy Schaefer ’41 of Ormond Beach, Fla., spent her career with the Curtis Publishing Company. She remembered her alma mater as a beneficiary of the Dorothy Schaefer Trust. Helen Brown Young ’35 of Frederick, and her late husband, W. Meredith Young, an emeritus member of the Hood College Board of Associates, remembered the College through a residuary bequest. Helen served for 41 years at Fredericktown Bank & Trust Company and retired as vice president and trust officer. Meredith also spent his career with Fredericktown Bank & Trust, serving as president for 20 years. The bequest will be added to the endowment fund. Ruth Whitaker Holmes ’55 and Portia Whitaker Shumaker ’55 Science Scholarship; Marian Winquist Kinzinger ’55 for the College’s endowed scholarship fund; and Lonza Bioscience for The Lonza Bioscience Scholarship.
