Children will visit over the holidays.” Joanne Dickerson Mason has recovered from two months of ill health and is back to normal. Betsy Dowling Barclay says, “Since I no longer drive, Ruth Matthews Alger has been great about taking me places. I’m hoping to move to another retirement community in Towson to be closer to my family and activities. I see Betsy Cannen Martin and Jack often in church. I was in touch with Teya Hall Mauk after the big fire in California. Fortunately for them none of the homes in their town were burned, although they were evacuated twice.” Dee Dreller Sosin recently went to southern Spain for 10 days of living in a small, Moorish/Spanish village. “My artist/writer friend lives in a home built into a cave,” she said. “Husband Rolfe is amazing. He is now in remission but can’t be away from his doctors yet. Two wonderful Wyer grandchildren filled in for me while I was gone. Next time, hopefully, he will join me on a dreamed-of adventure.” Lois Eldridge Funsch says, “All is OK. I spent time at Bethany Beach, Del., with Bee Jay Quillen Brustad and husband Bill.” Barbara Feuer Keller has moved to Leisure World of Virginia, 19355 Cypress Ridge, Lansdowne, VA 20776. She said, “I am alive and well and feel lucky to have been spared (in remission from Hodgkin’s and nonHodgkin’s lymphoma).” Liz Flower Anton has lived in Short Hills, N.J., for 45 years, has four children (two in Minnesota and two in New Jersey), and 12 grandchildren. She worked in publishing in New Jersey authoring cookbooks, and is now retired. Dorothy Handley Ewing had a fall that required a long rehab, plus a serious bacterial infection after surgery for breast cancer repair, but these challenges have not slowed her down. She is president of the Homewood Woman’s Club, a part of the Frederick retirement community where she lives, and took a delightful trip to Chicago with a Hood ’51 friend. Sally Herman Lunt is “still alive, serving on three boards and sailing on tall ships.” Her daughter is in Baltimore. Kay Spear Feldmann usually sees her when she visits. They planned to meet Dec. 23 to celebrate her 80th. Emma Jones Hann says, “Bill passed away May 31 after going through more than a year of chemo for stage IV lung cancer. So grateful for the extra time we had. I treasure our three-week trip in July 2008 to New Mexico and to our daughter’s in Minneapolis. I recently did a solo 1,400-mile trip to Maryland and Virginia, ending in Ohio.” Joan Kniffin Orozco sends love REUNION 2010 1930 1970 • • 1935 1975 • • 1940 1980 • • 1945 1985 • • 1950 1990 • • 1955 1995 • • 1960 2000 • • 1965 2005 Coming June 4-6, 2010! from Uruguay. She writes, “Wish I could make it up to Hood sometime but it’s rather difficult from way down here. All is well with me and my family. I keep busy with my six grandchildren—the oldest is 26 and is living with me for the moment, and the youngest is 3. I play lots of bridge, which keeps the old mind working.” Grace Laubach lives in a retirement community and likes to travel. She says, “Went down the Mississippi on a paddle wheeler.” Peg Lewis Christensen moved a year ago from Bermuda to Moorings Park in Naples, Fla., and finds it a wonderful, culturally rich community in which to live. “The Naples Philharmonic is simply fabulous,” she says. “Six months out of the year my brother and sister-in-law are here in Naples. Life here is outstanding!” Doris Lindblade Burn had knee replacement surgery and six weeks of extensive physical therapy, but no pain. She was honored for her 39 years of service to the Mont Clair Red Cross at their formal gala in February. Joyce Lines Cain and husband Stuart live in Fredonia, N.Y. Their son Stuart heads the Alden Research Laboratory in Holden, Mass. Joy and Stuart still sing a lot. They have three grandchildren. Joy has held state and national offices with the DAR. Phyl Loudermill Armstrong says, “Howdy. Have no ‘red hot’ news. Have spent the summer traveling in the U.S., mostly to see family—the most significant to Maryland to see sister Margie and her husband John, who are not well. But great-grands are doing well and everyone else is, too. Ruth Matthews Alger has been happily married for 16 years, enjoys family and friends and her involvement with a 460-member Woman’s Club that sponsors stimulating programs and supports various charities. Barbara McLean Higgins still resides in Hawaii but goes happily back and forth to the “mainland,” especially for her meetings with the Washington Society, which just bought the home in which George Washington lived as a youngster. Betsy Newcomer Payette keeps busy with volunteering, traveling, friends and family and taking continuing-education classes. “I keep in touch with Barbara Hickman Reynolds through Red Hat activities,” she says, “and Carolyn Rusk.” Ann Nygren Greenberg says, “My two daughters went to Arizona in August to visit with sister Dody. I had been there in February. Back at this ranch the beach plumming and green tomato pickling are past and the larder looks good! A Trollope is always at my bedside and a Rumpole on the DVD player—so much for my old age tastes and pleasures.” Janet Rowe Smith and husband David are retired and live in Fairfield, Conn. They enjoy volunteer work and keeping up with their three grandchildren. Janet was a nurse for 25 years at a private prep school. Mary Sihler Sauerteig and John celebrated their 50th Jan. 17 with a group of friends, including me (Mary-Lou Springhorn Leidheiser), who had attended their wedding. She says, “Sadly John died unexpectedly four months later from a fast growing cancer—a real shock. My younger son Bob, who lives in Alaska, has been here ever since, supporting me in many ways. Older son Bill lives in the Philadelphia area with his family.” Doris Simpson Felton and husband are well but a little tired from the hard work involved in downsizing their house. She still sings in the choir at her church but no longer plays the organ. “Forty years of that,” she says, “was enough.” Kay Spear Feldmann reports, “the Miller/Feldmann clan is busy, productive and healthy. Thank goodness. David and I took a northern cruise in August, visiting Iceland and Greenland, and had to change course because of a hurricane. We are settled in for winter routines—classes, volunteer work and fun with friends.” Shirley Tuska Jenks continues to enjoy volunteer work at Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. She visited Chicago for the annual meeting of the Society for Personality Assessment and “paddled for pink” in the third annual Dragon Boat Festival in support of the Breast Cancer Resource Center of the Princeton (N.J.)
