46 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2010 Giving Participation: 8.77% · Total Class Dollars: $1,867 25th Reunion June 4-6 Sue Povich DelConte 960 New Dover Road Edison, NJ 08820 ahoodlumof85@hotmail.com Greetings and salutations! Once again the Class of ’85 is brimming with news and most of it was culled courtesy of Facebook! Please consider joining and look for me (Sue Povich DelConte) when you get there, but beware, the lure of reconnecting is powerful. You should wait until you have lots of free time to search for friends! My first bit of news for the column came from Marsha Evans who also has important information for our upcoming reunion: “I have lived and worked in the Bethesda/D.C./ Northern Virginia corridor for many years, primarily in the IT industry. Luckily I was able to keep my job (at EDS, an HP Company) when I decided to move back to my hometown in Ocean View, Del., and am now working out of my home. I have a 5-year-old son Carter, who started kindergarten this fall. Over the past few summers I have enjoyed meeting and reconnecting with Hood alums at several cocktail parties hosted in the Bethany Beach, Del., area. Fortunately for all of us, President Volpe has attended each of these gatherings. If you haven’t yet met him, or had the privilege of hearing him speak about Hood, I would highly recommend it. He is truly inspirational and will make you fall in love with Hood all over again. From those gatherings I was asked to chair the Class of ’85 25th reunion festivities planned for 2010. I hope everyone will consider attending this milestone reunion, take a tour of campus and check out all the new buildings (as well as the existing ones in which we all shared so many good memories), and reconnect with your fellow alums. Feel free to e-mail me at marsha. evans@mchsi.com or friend me on Facebook if you have any questions or suggestions about Reunion Weekend. I would love to hear from you.” Susan Bond Kearney had lots of news: “I had a chance to visit with Gail Griffith ’84, Betsy Bond Brennen and Karen Elm Wirth at Gail’s place in Cape May, N.J. We had a blast reminiscing about the old days. My update on my personal life: I earned my master’s in education degree from Loyola College (Loyola Univ. Maryland) in May 2009. I have just begun my 15th year as director of technology at St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, Md. In addition to the usual leisure activities and board responsibilities, I have begun teaching a one-credit intro to education class at Loyola in my spare time. This has been a great experience. Daughter Emma has just started freshman year at the St. Paul’s School for Girls. Son Tommy is in the sixth grade at St. Paul’s School for Boys. Mitch is doing well in his law practice and all is great!” Susan works with Martha Barrett Stevens, who is still working as a learning specialist for St. Paul’s School in Maryland. Her daughter Allison, who is a senior, just visited Hood! “We shall see,” says Martha. “I would love to see everyone!” It was wonderful to hear from Susanne Mahan Harris who wrote: “I am on Facebook under susanne.harris@ duke.edu. I am still working at Duke where I have been for the last 20 years as a research project coordinator in the Center for Aging. All spare time goes into autism. I have started three nonprofits over the last five years, so that keeps us pretty busy.” Maggie Rose Montez was a commuter student at Hood. One of her claims to fame at Hood was her mom, Mrs. Rose, the receptionist in Alumnae Hall. Mom made an art form out of being a receptionist and cherished her many, many years at Hood. Mom passed away a little more than two years ago at the ripe age of 90! According to Maggie, “The Hood campus was practically an extension of the backyard of our family home at the corner of Elm and Fifth streets! I have been in Palm Spring, Calif., for more than 20 years with CBRE, Inc., as a senior vice president in commercial real estate, with my husband Larry and two teenagers! My siblings and I have great memories of Hood.” Lora Lee Schrader Gravatt also sent in news: “I graduated out of the home economics department, at which time housed the retail management students. While at Hood I worked in the bookstore between classes. Upon graduation I married, moved to Virginia and worked in retailing for five years in various positions, the last position being a district manager before having my first child. Now my husband and three kids—who are 19, 17 and 14—live in Dunn Loring, Va. Hard to believe I have a daughter in college and a son on the way next year! Time flies! I am a year away from finishing a master of divinity degree and work full time at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Va., as the pastor for children and families.” Amanda Ward Grace and her family moved in 2008 to Delta, Pa., to expand their sheep farm. Cedarland Farm is located on 30 acres in York County. Amanda has about 30 Icelandic sheep (plus alpacas, horses and English angora rabbits) that she raises for meat and wool. The whole family is involved in the business, from sheep care and selling meat at farmer’s market; to washing and spinning the wool; and weaving, knitting and sculpting animal figures. Amanda still finds time to sing at community and church events. The farm is open for tours and catching up with old friends. Visit their Web site at www.cedarlandfarm.com. Natalie Rivers Bruno sent greetings from France: “Still teaching English in France to all ages, mainly engineering schools the past few years. My kids are now 19 (Quentin), 17 (Frances), and 13 (Margaret). I get back to Maryland every summer. Still in touch with my favorite Hood roomie Stephanie Bouchat, whom I hope to see next summer for the first time in 24 years! She lives in Oregon so we are far away. I have recently reconnected with others thanks to Facebook!” Anyone who needs relief from her mid-life aches and pains needs look no further than Potomac, Md., where Mamie Fosnocht Albrecht owns her own massage therapy business, when she isn’t busy tending to the needs of the “teenagers still living at home!” Mamie is on Facebook so friend her for further information! Cindy Griffiths Hardgrove took a few minutes to send in the following: “I’ve been working for Fairfax County Public Schools as a kindergarten instructional assistant for the past five years. Prior to that, I taught preschool for about 10 years. I’ve been married to my husband Mark for 21 years and we have three children—Katie, who is a junior at James Madison Univ. in Harrisonburg, Va; Daniel, who is a freshman, also at JMU; and William, who is 13 and in the eighth grade. Sorry to say that I haven’t seen anyone from Hood in a very long time but because of Facebook I am having so much fun reconnecting with so many Hood friends!” A warm congratulations to Wendy Alling who became a grandmother when her daughter Jessica gave birth to Zaki Nov.11! My goal is to try to reach everyone who is a member of the class and include them in an upcoming column, so please drop me a line so I can share your accomplishments! In addition to the aforementioned Facebook, my e-mail and mailing information haven’t changed, so please feel free to contact me either way. I will be sending out postcards for the next column, 10 at a time, so please keep an eye open! Best wishes in the new year to one and all! Liz Fusco Farzam is working as a middle school reading teacher in Colorado. She lives in Superior and has a 6-year-old boy who just finished kindergarten. Christine Dunn Behrendt M.A. ’91 reported that her son Evan, 18, will be graduating from high school this May; her son Erik, 16, will get his driver’s license in January; and her daughter Chloe, 9, wants to be a high school student! Christine is in her sixth year as assistant principal at Walkersville Elementary and loves hearing from fellow Hoodlums! Julie Booth Little is still in the theater. She’s been teaching drama for the last eight years and works with her own production company. She visited with Noemi Mendez Bradley over the summer and they had a blast! Jane Brophy Martinez has been teaching fitness classes and checking out colleges with daughter Hadden, 17. Her son Nate, 10, is an avid soccer player and runner. They spent Fourth of July with Stacey Robins Baum and their families had a great time! Janet Drogin Wilson was excited to have her daughter Riley, 17, check out Hood in December. We both think it’s a good thing that the walls can’t talk to our kids! Irene Flores is teaching more yoga these days, which keep her “beautifully simple” life centered. I love that phrase, Irene! Paige Flory is a stay-at-home mom, married to Eric and lives in Manheim, Pa., with their two children—Olivia, 21, and Isaac, 13. Olivia is a senior at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, studying Asian studies and art. Paige volunteers in her church and community, drawing on her past career in technology sales and marketing. Kellye Greenwald is still as busy as ever—working at Hopkins Bayview, singing karaoke, participating in the Maryland Renaissance Festival and baking cookies every Friday. She even got to have a few beach weekends with her BF this summer! Daughter Samantha is a junior at the Univ. of Maine and son Charlie is a junior at Shawnee High School in New Jersey. Sue Hastings had a fabulous mission trip to Mozambique and is planning to go back next summer, and yearns to be somewhere in Africa on a more long-term basis. Now to figure out the details. Chrysti Hogan is in her 24th year of teaching. She primarily teaches geometry and coaches the bowling team. She attended a Hood reunion with her mom, Edith Howard Hogan ’59, who was celebrating her 50th
