A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO NEW YORK CONSTRUCTION ith so many projects completed or underway, each meeting a critical educational need, choosing among them to identify the SCA’s Signature Projects is almost impossible. As Chief of Staff and Executive Director Lorraine Grillo says, “Here at the SCA, we treat all of our projects—past, present and future—as Signature Projects.” After all, each of these projects is improving New York City communities by creating, reusing or renovating school facilities. Some creatively repurpose factories and warehouses, establishing beautiful, modern schools like the Urban Assembly School for Applied Math & Science. Others, such as Battery Park City School, incorporate cutting edge environmental/sustainable elements. Still others feature groundbreaking architecture and interior design, like the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. All are designed to ensure that every child, regardless of background, is provided with an opportunity to learn and thrive. Given that every school is treated with appreciation for its unique, positive qualities— much like the children who occupy it—establishing a short list of the ‘best’ SCA projects is challenging. That said, the following provides a small sampling of recent projects that highlight the skill, creativity and dedication of the SCA team and its construction industry partners. MOTT HAVEN CAMPUS - BRONX, NY Mott Haven is the SCA’s largest construction project to date, consisting of four separate schools that share communal spaces. The SCA, along with Perkins Eastman Architects and Leon D. DeMatteis Construction Corporation, is transforming a New York City-owned former rail yard in the Bronx into an exciting, intricate and beautiful complex scheduled to open in September 2010. Boasting a combined capacity of approximately 2,300 seats, the complex will offer the advantages of a small school setting with the bene" ts of large school amenities. With a gross area of approximately 292,000 square feet, the two-story base building will support four separate school structures of three stories each, with lower spaces that are shared by some or all of the four schools. Amenities include an athletic " eld, auditorium, two gymnasiums, four cafeterias, music practice rooms, a dance studio, a central campus library and the building support systems. In addition to full air conditioning, the 12 W PROJECTS new school will be technologically advanced, incorporating Smartboards™, wireless LAN and Internet access in every classroom. The building was designed with a full set of spaces dedicated to each of the separate small school organizations, as well as the larger common spaces. METROPOLITAN AVENUE CAMPUS – QUEENS, NY The Metropolitan Avenue Campus is another large project – two separate schools with shared spaces on a 7.8 acre site in Queens. The campus was acquired by the SCA for the construction of a 1,000-student high school, a 700-student Intermediate School/High School and a 216-seat Citywide Special Education cluster, for a total capacity of 1,900 seats. In all, there will be 40 classrooms, tri-facial science workstations, art studios and technology labs, medical and guidance suites, a shared competition gym, two libraries, four cafeterias and a 750-seat auditorium. Special education features include multiple speech, occupational and physical therapy rooms, among others. All in all, the " ve-story building with a cellar " oor will have a gross area of approximately 298,678 square feet. Fully air-conditioned, with wireless LAN and Internet access throughout the premises, the building has been designed to incorporate ample shared spaces, as well as those dedicated to each school. FRANK SINATRA HIGH SCHOOL OF THE ARTS – QUEENS, NY Tony Bennett co-founded this New York City public school with the goal of educating high school students in the visual and performing arts. The design for the Frank Sinatra High School of the Arts, which opened in September, celebrates the importance of the arts by providing an environment that visually, spatially and programmatically connects with the surrounding community. The " ve-story structure accommodates 1,000 students and is organized around a centrally located theater which seats 800. It houses 147,000 square feet, including 38,000 square feet at the lower level for a 99-car parking garage. Visitors enter the new building through a double height lobby and skylight atrium, which uni" es the " ve " oors, and culminates at the top " oor with a rooftop landscape courtyard for gatherings and outdoor performances. The exterior envelope is a composition of brick, glass and aluminum, and the perimeter frame of the classrooms and administrative areas surrounding the central theater de" ne the site’s street wall.
