ELMHURST EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS—QUEENS, NY The Elmhurst Educational Campus project is a largescale conversion of the four-story Art Leather Factory, which originally housed several companies and tenants. “We converted this massive building into a fabulous educational campus where we have a long-term lease,” says Ms. Grillo. The new building accommodates three high schools. Impressive in scope, this project required a complete gut renovation with selective demolition, while preserving the historical signi" cance of the exterior. The school includes grades 9–12 and a City-wide special education component. The site is 201,081 square feet in size and is fully air-conditioned and accessible, with both dedicated and communal spaces. Each high school occupies its own " oor of the building with 12 standard Frank Sinatra High School of The Arts classrooms, two special education classrooms, two science demonstration rooms, one prep room and one laboratory. Each " oor also has an art studio, technology laboratory, resource room, 265 seat multi-purpose space, administrative and staff areas and a parent coordinator room.
