A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO NEW YORK CONSTRUCTION BUILDING SCHOOLS BUILDING OPPORTUNITY Through the DOE’s Five Year Capital Plan, the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) is partnering with the construction industry to build much needed modern, ef! cient, sustainable and technologically advanced classrooms. The plan also funds improvements that are critical to providing a positive instructional environment in the City’s over 1,200 existing public school buildings. The SCA is constantly working to further streamline and improve how it does business through initiatives in areas such as green design, commissioning, small business mentoring and new technology. In this special issue, we’ll look at how the SCA does it and what it all means for you and your ! rm. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the McGraw Hill “Work Smart with the SCA” supplement on the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA). We hope that the Supplement highlights the SCA’s ongoing and highly productive partnership with the design and construction industries. Our partnership has translated into tremendous growth and opportunity for participating " rms, as well as great bene" ts for the City’s public school children. This year, the SCA embarks on the " rst year of our current $11.31 billion Capital Plan, while we continue to implement and complete work associated with the FY2005-2009 $13.1 billion Capital Plan. Working together with design and engineering professionals, contractors, developers, charter school partners, and others, we opened 18 new school buildings this past September and will open another 25 new school buildings with nearly 18,000 new seats in September 2010. We are proud of our extraordinary work record and of our continued ability to open schools on time and on budget. At the same time, we are also proud of our internal process improvements, which include: • Launch of our Vendor Access System (VAS) • Development and implementation of a Project Controls Unit • Introduction of the Consultant Evaluation System • Creation of a Contract Compliance Unit These enhancements make it easier than ever to partner productively with us as we work to enhance the learning environment for New York City’s children. As you’ll see in the following pages, we are open to new ideas and are embracing the power of technology and accountability.
