A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO NEW YORK CONSTRUCTION hen asked what the SCA is seeking to achieve through its internship programs, Senior Director for Business Development Suzanne Veira does not hesitate. “We are intensely committed to ensuring that these programs positively impact the interns’ lives and careers, and we are dedicated to making it a truly worthwhile experience,” she says. The SCA’s High School and College Internship Programs are designed to nurture talented young men and women interested in an exciting career in construction. The SCA identi" es students who want to take advantage of the wide variety of opportunities in architecture, engineering, construction management, estimating, technology and other related " elds. GROWING THE NEXT GENERATION W Throughout their internship, each student is paired with a collegeaged " eld supervisor who serves as a mentor to a group of 20 interns, monitoring their work, progress and performance through regular site visits and meetings. but we’re always looking for ways to improve.” COLLEGE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The SCA also provides opportunities to older students in the year-long College Internship Program (established in 1994) offered to 25 college interns in various branches of the construction industry. According to Greg Glasgow, Manager of Operations in Business Development, “The long-term goal of the College Program is to prepare students for full-time employment in their desired " eld.” In addition to Architecture and Engineering and Project Management, the SCA also typically offers placements in its Business Development, Human Resources, Information Technology and Legal Divisions. All students interested in a college internship must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and interview with the SCA host department. If the students wish to continue for the summer and following academic year, they must receive a positive performance evaluation in addition to maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Ultimately, the intent is to position graduates of the Program to compete for permanent entry level openings as they arise at the SCA and elsewhere in the industry. A BRIGHT FUTURE “We try to ensure that we provide students with everything they need to succeed and thrive,” says Veira. “We have a great Program, 41 “In both the High School and College Programs, our aim is to help give the interns as much success as possible in life,” says Saake, “and make the experience and the training worthwhile to all participants.” If the 391 High School interns and 50 College interns who have come through the SCA in just the last two years are any indication, the Authority is making great progress towards this goal. ■ HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Established in 1990, the High School Internship Program places 200 high school juniors and seniors at the SCA and various architectural, construction and engineering " rms each summer for six weeks. The students work 30 hours a week, with four days devoted to on-the-job training and one day devoted to classroom learning. “It’s always an interesting challenge to structure the internships to provide career guidance and mentoring, making them as practical and careerrelated as possible,” says Veira. Students must be recommended by their school, maintain a GPA of 80 or better and have demonstrated strong leadership and/or community service involvement. Depending on availability, each intern is placed with a " rm based on their career interests, individual skills and abilities. “The students have the opportunity to work in a healthy business environment and learn from professionals in their " eld of interest,” says Ruby Saake, Internship Program Manager.
