About USGBC-LA & LEED® (Source: USGBC national website: www.usgbc.org) The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a community of more than 17,000 organizations representing every sector of the building industry united by a common purpose: to transform the building marketplace to sustainability. Our leaders work to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, financially profitable and healthy places to live and work. We are united to advance our mission of transforming the building industry to sustainability. Core Purpose The U.S. Green Building Council’s core purpose is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life. USGBC’s 80 regional chapters serve as the front door of the Council, providing green building resources, education, and leadership opportunities in their communities. USGBC’s elected Board of Directors guides the Council’s strategic direction and focus. The Council’s programs and activities are implemented by an energetic, passionate staff of more than 90, headed by a professional management team. What is LEED®? The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria. LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
