E-News HFA continued the publication of its e-news, a free internet newsletter. The issues covered foundation news and announcements and also special “Focus On” features, which addressed topics important to the end-of-life care and grief. Examples of a few of the e-news issues include: April 2009 - Focus On: Celebrating Volunteers March 2009 - Focus On: Interview with Claire Lavin, Ph.D., professor of psychology February 2009 - Focus On: Grant Recipients for HFA’s New Funding Program January 2009 - Focus On: Interview with Sandy Chen Stokes of the Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care December 2008 - Focus On: Interview with Patricia Loder of The Compassionate Friends HFA’s monthly e-news began in 2000, as a way of connecting with HFA’s diverse audience of professionals and consumers. As of June 2009, the e-news reached more than 7800 subscribers each month, with a very low monthly unsubscribe rate. Readers of the e-news are connected to timely subjects that have been posted on HFA’s Hospice and Caregiving Blog, and learn about upcoming educational opportunities and conferences run by other organizations. All of HFA’s past e-newsletters are archived on our website, www.hospicefoundation.org/blog to serve as a resource for professionals and lay people. Ask-an-Expert Ask-an-Expert is HFA’s free, consumer-information desk for the public. In FY 2009, more than a thousand calls and emails were answered by HFA’s experts, who provided guidance on many subjects, including: how to talk to a physician about hospice care, how to pay for hospice care, where to find a hospice, and what hospice care provides. Our staff and consultants also answered questions about grief and grief counseling, connected people with translators when appropriate, and assisted caregivers with helpful resources. Individuals reach HFA through a 1-800 number or through HFA’s Ask-an-Expert email service, which provides consumers a confidential way to ask a physician, grief expert or trained professional about their end-of-life questions and concerns.
