Get Ready for AAHSA’s 2010 Homecoming Week Mark your calendars: AAHSA’s 2010 Homecoming Week will be May 31 – June 4. For the past two years, providers have hosted hundreds of successful open houses, barbecues and seniors’ programs. This year’s celebration is a bit different. The theme is “Who Decides?” We’re encouraging members to use it as a platform for launching conversations about the future of aging in their communities. Why the change? Because who better than AAHSA members to bring together policy makers, business leaders and people of all ages to talk about aging and what it means for their community. Our homecoming toolkit features ideas, statistics, sample invitations and more to help you plan, promote and execute a forum focused on this question. The pieces are there to help you demonstrate your thought leadership on an important issue facing our field and society. For information, visit the 2010 AAHSA Homecoming page. Coalition Offers Providers a Chance to Become Leaders in States Seniors to Seniors, a coalition of organizations educating seniors on the benefits of health reform, isn’t just helping older adults. It is giving AAHSA members the opportunity to become known as experts on aging services in their communities. Bonnie Gauthier, CEO of Hebrew Health Care in West Hartford, Conn., spoke at a Seniors to Seniors event about how long-term services and supports provisions in health reform legislation would help people get the help they need as they age. Soon after, Gauthier was interviewed on a radio program focused on older adults and was invited to speak before the retiree chapter of the Connecticut Federation of Teachers and the New Haven chapter of the Connecticut Association of Retired State Employees. “At the event, I notice a consistent concern among seniors from different areas and walks of life about long-term services and supports and other health care issues,” Gauthier said. “I believe
the participants saw this as a conduit of factual information that could flow across the state.” In Arkansas, John Tieperman is also taking part in the coalition. Tieperman, executive director of Presbyterian Village in Little Rock, spoke at a similar Seniors to Seniors event where he addressed how health care reform would affect seniors, particularly around long-term services and supports. Visit Seniors to Seniors to learn more about the coalition.
